Week 4, day 2


Today's topic is Holidays








1) Listen to the dialogue and the three stories, the three summaries of the conversation, without reading the texts. Listen 2-3 times. After that listen to the dialogue and the summaries again looking at the texts and check whether you could understand all the details or not.

Tim: What’s your favourite holiday?
Bob: Well, that depends. I like any that gives me a long time off school.
Tim: The longest break is summer, but that doesn’t count because it’s not for a holiday. But really, which holiday do you like best?
Bob: I guess Easter is my favourite, because I really like hunting for Easter eggs. My whole family makes Easter eggs and hides them, then all the children look for them.
Tim: That sounds fun. But I prefer New Year’s Eve.
Bob: That’s a strange choice.
Tim: I know but I love staying up late and watching one year change into the next. And I don’t mind drinking champagne.

Training 1
Bob: “I like holidays. My favourite holiday is a holiday that gives me a long time off school. The longest break is summer but that doesn’t count because it is not for a holiday. The best holiday for me is Easter because I really like hunting for Easter eggs. My whole family makes Easter eggs and hides them and then the children look for them. It is such fun.”

I like New Year’s Eve because I love staying up late, drinking champagne and watching one year change into the next. And by the way, this holiday is also very popular in Russia!”

Training 3
Bob’s favourite holiday is any holiday that gives him a long time off school. The summer break doesn’t count because it’s not for a holiday. He says that Easter is his favourite, he really likes hunting for Easter eggs. His whole family makes Easter eggs and hides them, then all the children look for them. Tim prefers New Year’s Eve. He loves staying up late and watching one year change into the next. And he doesn’t mind drinking champagne.




- Read the dialogue and the summaries yourself recording your voice. Then listen to the original texts and to your voice sentence by sentence.




- Training 1. Answer the questions. Read the first question and answer it, then read the second... and so on.


- Now just look at the questions and answer them one by one. Do it 2-3 times. Try not to stop after each question.






- Say the text of Training 1 without looking at the text. Record your voice and compare your story with the story in the book.


- Training 2. Do the same with Training 2.


- Training 3. Read the summary 2-3 times. You don't have to memorise it now.






2) Listen to Topic 41, Public Holidays 2-3 times.


- Listen and read the text now. Stop the recording after each sentence and try to imitate the native speaker.

We haven’t got many public holidays. We have got about eight of them. March 15, August 20, October 23, Christmas and Easter are public holidays in Hungary. They are days-off. We don’t work then. People stay at home with their families. They can travel or go hiking. They can visit their relatives. There are often fireworks on holidays. Children like them. Christmas and Easter are my favourite holidays. There are some old Christmas and Easter traditions. We give each other nice presents at Christmas. We paint eggs at Easter. Christmas is coming now!
